„With Nighthawks Waits established the soused lounge-act persona that would carry him through the rest of the 70s. Fusing the gruff delivery of Lord Buckley with the meanderingly tangential asides of Lenny Bruce, he prefaced the loosely linked songs with the monologues that would become a staple of his live-sets. `Nighthawks came out of Tom´s idea about parodying guys who used to read poetry in front of jazz bands´, recalled Bones Howe, who recorded the album live in front of a small studio audience in July 1975. The album emphatically puts Waits in the jazz camp and cut his ties with orthodox rock songwriting.“ (Mojo)
