"Tallahassee; Archive Series Volume no. 5" ist das Lost-in-Time-Debüt-Album von IRON & WINE. Eine Sammlung von Songs, die in einem Zeitfenster von zwei Jahren (1998-99) aufgenommen wurden, in denen IRON & WINEs Sam Beam das College of Motion Picture Arts der Florida State University besuchte. Drei Jahre später veröffentlichte IRON & WINE das Album "The Creek Drank The Cradle" womit eine Reihe von Alben begann, die weithin als Teil einer neuen Blaupause im Singer-Songwriter-Genre gelobt wurden. "Tallahassee" ist nicht der Versuch, die Geschichte neu zu schreiben, sondern will stattdessen die allerersten Schritte auf Beams Reise zu einem der originellsten und markantesten Künstler Amerikas dokumentieren. Die elf Songs umfassende Sammlung wurde aus einer Reihe von Aufnahmen zusammengestellt, die von Beam selbst (größtenteils) vergessen worden waren, aber von seinem ehemaligen Mitbewohner und einstigen IRON & WINE-Mitglied EJ Holowicki aufbewahrt wurden. Holowicki, der später als Sounddesigner bei Skywalker Sound arbeitete, war ein Katalysator, der dafür sorgte, dass Beam diese Songs dokumentierte, während die beiden in einem Haus in der St. Augustine St. nahe dem Campus wohnten. Holowicki fungierte nicht nur als Tontechniker und Bassist, sondern auch als Archiv-Produzent, um die Tracks für die offizielle Veröffentlichung vorzubereiten. "Tallahassee" ist mit seiner spärlichen Instrumentalisierung und den Live-Aufnahmen in einem einzigen Raum sehr an die frühen IRON & WINE-Veröffentlichungen "The Creek Drank The Cradle", "The Sea & The Rhythm" und "In The Reins" angelehnt. Vom wandernden Country-esken Tempo von "Calm On The Valley" bis zum eher Mid-Tempo Harvest-Ära Vibe von "This Solemn Day", die Samen des Porträts eines Künstlers als junger Mann sind alle vorhanden. Obwohl noch in der Entstehungsphase, ist die lyrische Bildsprache und die intime musikalische Natur, die zu einem Markenzeichen des IRON & WINE "Sounds" geworden ist, in "Tallahassee" präsent und vertreten. Alte Musik-Filesharer beanspruchen seit langem den Besitz einer Reihe von frühen IRON & WINE-Aufnahmen, von denen viele noch nicht offiziell veröffentlicht wurden. Während diese Platte nicht ganz alle Fehler der frühen Tage des Internets korrigieren wird, wird sie viele der Lücken für langjährige Fans füllen.

Unser Rezensent beschreibt das so:
21er. ´98er/99er Aufnahmen, mit 1 Ausnahme unveröffentlicht, live im Studio (zu Hause?), eine Ecke vorm offiziellen Debut 2001. Großteils eingespielt mit 2 Akustikgitarren, Bass und sparsamen Drums (die ab und zu weggelassen werden) als Grundgerüst, hier und da ergänzen Harmonica, eine Slide (Dobro?), Harmony Vocals. (Songwriter-) Folk dominiert, intim und ganz in sich versunken oder relaxt schwingend oder irgendwo dazwischen (supra-entspannt, ein bischen heitere Gelassenheit, wahlweise nonchalante Melancholie verströmend). Entfernt erinnert es 2,3 Mal an den frühen akustischen Neil Young, selten macht sich eine dezent traditionsbewußtere Ausrichtung bemerkbar (mitsamt Country-Anleihen, freilich nicht gerade dominant), sporadisch wirkt die Musik völlig nackt, die Gitarrenbegleitung ist im Prinzip eher simpel, beinhaltet aber auch ein paar sehr schöne Verzierungen. Und einige Songs besitzen chon hier eine beträchtliche Klasse, wie z.B. Why Hate Winter, Calm On The Valley (so einfach wie wunderschön). Natürlich klingt das alles den Frühwerken wesentlich verwandter als neueren Alben. (detlev von duhn)

Archive Series Volume No. 5: Tallahassee is the lost-in-time debut album from Iron & Wine. A collection of songs recorded three years prior to his official Sub Pop debut, The Creek Drank the Cradle (2002). A period before the concept of Iron & Wine existed and principal songwriter Sam Beam was studying at Florida State University with the intent of pursuing a career in film. Tallahassee documents the very first steps on a journey that would lead to a career as one of America's most original and distinctive singer-songwriters. Creek arrived like a thief in the night with its lo-fi, hushed vocals and intimate nature, while almost inversely Tallahassee comes with a strange sense of confidence. Perhaps an almost youthful discretion that likely comes from being too young to know better and too naïve to give a shit. The recordings themselves are more polished than Creek and give a peak into what a studio version of that record might have offered up. Tallahassee was recorded over the course of 1998-1999 when Beam and future bandmate EJ Holowicki moved into a house together. Beam had not been performing publicly, however he was known for playing an original song or two in the early morning glow of a long night. Holowicki also in the film program and who would go onto a career as a sound designer at Skywalker Sound, had a mobile recording device and after some prodding convinced his friend to record these late-night meditations. Together they would record close to twenty-four songs, ideas and sketches, with EJ on bass and Sam on vocals, guitar, harmonica and drums. The recordings - all captured in the house where they lived - have a "live in the room" feel akin to say Neil Young's Harvest or Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left, rather than the homespun lo-fi 4-track home recording experiment taking place at the time. These recordings, minus one track, have never been made available and were instead left preserved on a hard drive for the last twenty years. The one track that floated out there, called "In Your Own Time" was shared without a title to childhood friend Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses) at some point. The song became known as the "Fuck Like A Dog" song and Ben shared it with more than a few folks during the golden era of mix cd's. Two of those folks were Jonathan Poneman from Sub Pop and journalist Mike McGonigal, who included it on his best songs of 2001 mix cd, passed out to friends and acquaintances. And for many that is where the Iron & Wine story begins, until now_ Tallahassee is the foreword to your favorite book that you've somehow skipped over time and time again. It's an alternative history mixed with some revisionist history told over the course of eleven songs. It's also the debut record by Iron & Wine some twenty years after the fact.
