Das 2001er Album, laut Columbia sein 43., bietet zwölf neue Dylan-Kompositionen, die Dylan mit seiner Tourband und dem legendären Augie Myers im Frühjahr einspielte.
"Love And Theft" kommt zudem mit zusätzlichem 5.1 Surround-Mix.
“All the songs are variations on the 12-bar theme and blues-based melodies. The music here is an electronic grid, the lyrics being the sub-structure that holds it all together. Ich habe die CD erst einen Tag vor Druckunterlagenschluß erhalten und kann kein abschließendes Urteil finden. Vieles wirkt recht beliebig, mit Songs zwischen Rockabilly-Rhythmus, Western Swing und Blues-Riffs – und zwischen „gut abgehangen“ (für Dylan Fans) und „abgenudelt“ (für die anderen). Es braucht bis Song 7 – „High Water“ – bis etwas kommt, was tatsächlich hängen bleibt... „Honest With Me“ (Track 9) hat Biss und auch das abschließende “Sugar Baby” würde ich zu den besseren Stücken zählen. Aber wahrscheinlich habe ich alles völlig falsch verstanden. Die Dylanologen werden es schon richten.
Zu dem Thema gibt es ein ausführliches Review in der September-Ausgabe des Rolling Stone. Wolfgang Doebeling beschreibt das Album gewohnt wortreich und gibt satte 4 1/2 Sterne.
