In über dreißig Jahren Bandgeschichte haben die Walkabouts aus Seattle uns als Label geprägt, aber auch darüber hinaus begeistert. Sei es mit dem Alt. Country Meisterwerk „Satisfied Mind“, dem elegischen „Trail of Stars“ oder dem wütenden „Acetylene“, alles was Chris Eckman, Carla Torgerson und Co angefasst haben, war und ist- große Klasse.
Doppel-CD zum Preis von einer halben. “Lost Songs & Rarities 1995-2001” untertitelt, sind diese 29 Songs der Nachfolger zu “Death Valley Days”, welches die Singles und Compilationbeiträge der Jahre davor zusammenfasste.
Man sollte meinen, dass so eine geschäftige Band wie die Walkabouts bei Compilations und Singles qualitative Kompromisse eingeht, aber da liegt man völlig falsch. Es scheint als würden sie bei Coverversionen grundsätzlich zur Hochform auflaufen und sich bei den B-Seiten stilistische Freiheiten nehmen, die auf den aktuellen Alben einfach nicht ins Konzept passen. So ergibt sich eine äußerst erfrischende Song-Sammlung auf qualitativ hohem Niveau, deren Durchhörcharakter trotz unterschiedlichster Aufnahmeorte und – Phasen einfach phänomenal ist.
In umgekehrter Reihenfolge findet man gerade erst aufgenommenes, überschüssiges Glitterhouse Material (“Drunken Soundtracks”, “Unbreakable”, “Undermine”), dazu der hypergeniale Dubmix von “People Such as These”, Coverversionen von 22-Pistepirrko (auch auf OOTB8), Mickey Newbury, Serge Gainsbourg (zuvor unveröffentlicht) und Neil Young (“Albuquerque”). Weiter den Bone Mix von “On The Day” und “Desert Skies” im Black Light Mix, die unveröffentlichten “Call Me Back Again” (von `99) und “The Getaway” (`01), sowie “Bonnie & Clyde” von der “Bruxelles” Mailorder-Only (der einzige Livetrack hier). Und das war nur Disc 1.
CD 2 beleuchtet die Virgin-Jahre und beginnt mit “Rage On”, “Death´s Black Train”, “Silver City” und “Thieves Like Us”, alle um `96/`97 entstanden und bisher in den Archiven dahingeschlummert. “Corcovado” erschien nur auf einem Tribut an Antonio Carlos Jobim. Mit “Cover Of Darkness”, “Come Along” und dem “Sanitarium Blues” (von Townes Van Zandt) spendiert uns die Band alle drei B-Seiten der nie veröffentlichten “Immaculate” CD-Single. “Cowbells Shakin´” findet sich sonst nur auf Out Of The Blue 6 und “The Light Will Stay On” gibt es hier in einem wundervollen Country-Mix.
Zwei CD-Singles erschienen damals auf Virgin, fünf der sechs Bonustracks erfahren hier ihre Wiederauferstehung (die Singles sind vergriffen). Schon damals war ich schwer begeistert, fünf Jahre später hat sich meine Meinung nicht geändert. „Desierto“ kommt daher wie Calexico noir, „Glory Road“ (mit Trompete) stammt aus der Feder von Neil Diamond und endet mit einem 2-minütigen Instrumental-Freak-Out. „Winded“ (von Carla gesungene atmosphärische Ballade), „Incignito“ (instrumental) und „Master Of None“ (düster/episch) sorgen für ein furioses Finale. Das Album schließt mit „Theme From `Where The Air Is Cool And Dark´”, auch auf der gleichnamigen Mailorder-CD zu finden.
Natürlich gibt es minutiöse Informationen zu den Recordings und der Besetzung.
Eine wirklich grandiose Zusammenstellung, die einerseits von einfühlsame Coverversionen lebt, andererseits aber eine Band zeigt, die auf B-Seiten viel wagt (und Potenzial zeigt) und viel gewinnt.
The Walkabouts are a very prolific band. There is always an idea, a concept, a soundtrack, a compilation-appearance here, a cooperation there. Not only do they deliver a new album regularly, they also record and tour as Chris & Carla, and lately have founded the band I (with a record on Glitterhouse), which consists of Chris, Carla, Glenn and two more Eckman brothers, who´ve been in the very first incarnation of the band.
A few years ago we released “Death Valley Days”, which compiled the lost songs from 1985 - ´95. One might think that there can´t be any more “Lost Songs & Rarities”, but there are, more than 2 CDs worth of them.
This two CD-set features 29 songs “that got away” between 1995 and 2001 – tracks for compilations, cover-versions, remixes, outtakes, only one live-track and a lot of B-sides for singles that weren´t even released. In reverse order, too, so CD 1 starts with studio-material from August 2001 and ends with the title-track from the Glitterhouse Mailorder-Only CD “Where The Air Is Cool And Dark”, recorded in `96.
The latter was the last track the band delivered before they signed to Virgin, where the band would have quite some success initially. “Drunken Soundtracks” features a handful of excellent tracks from the major-labels days that only saw the light of days on CD-singles or promotional releases.
While the indivual band albums were always founded on a concept which was finally formed into a new release, on “Drunken Soundtracks” we find a band that stretches out, that crosses stylistic boundaries, that tries a lot a lot and suceeds each and every time.
It is pretty obvious that we love this band that´s been with us for a long time. And based on those 29 tracks (they didn´t even use) from the past 5 years it is refreshing to see that there´s still plenty of life in The Walkabouts.
