Die verlässliche Größe bei der Aufarbeitung der Reggae History in Form von edlen Compilations ist das Londoner Label Soul Jazz. Diesmal geht es um Rocksteady und soulful Reggae, der wie der Titel schon sagt viel mit klassischem amerikanischem Soul zu tun hat. Wir hören 18 Studio One-Perlen aus den späten 60ern und frühen 70ern im gemütlichen Groove fernab von jeder Ska-Aufgeregtheit, dafür teils mit Bläsern und immer subtilen Vocal-Arrangements eben oft recht nahe (und um einige Jahre zeitversetzt) am amerikanischen Soul-Geschehen. Echte Ausgrabungen sind in diesem Genre nicht mehr zu machen, hier gelingt es aber dennoch, auf abgedroschene Gassenhauer zu verzichten, sich aber auch nicht am obskuren Raritätenbereich abzuarbeiten. Weshalb „Rocksteady Got Soul“ auch etliche amtliche Klassiker und auch große Namen zu bieten hat: Alton Ellis, John Holt, The Heptones, Jackie Mittoo, The Ethiopians, Lee Perry aber auch Akteure von weniger prominentem Rang musikalisch aber durchweg überzeugend.
