Wiederveröffentlichung des ehemals bei Saddle Creek erschienenen Debutalbums der Band um Adrianne Lenker.

Die vierköpfige Truppe aus Brooklyn wird auf ihrem Albumdebüt von Sängerin Adrienne Lenker dominiert, stilistisch geht „Masterpiece“ in Richtung gitarrendominiertem US-Indie-Sound. Unprätentiös-melodiös, oft von zwei E-Gitarren getragen, erweist sich Lenker als charismatische Storytellerin. Stimmlich ein bisschen Richtung PJ Harvey, Sharon Van Etten, Juliana Hatfield oder Scout Niblett, die Gitarren teilweise auch mal etwas gröber eskalierend, allzu wild wird es hier aber nicht, der Song und die Geschichte bleiben das entscheidende Maß. Am schönsten sind die ganz kleinen, subtil inszenierten, fast impressionistisch hingetupften Songs, da fällt auch der Gesang irgendwie intimer aus – denn zumindest phasenweise neigt Adrienne Lenker auch zu kleinen, arty-exaltierten Spitzen. Aber meistens nur angedeutet, denn letztlich vertraut man dann doch der Kraft der Songs, von denen der allerletzte dann auch der klar beste ist: „Parallels“ ist Cosmic Americana Richtung Jason Molina und Crazy Horse, was der vielversprechenden Band dann doch am besten steht.. Masterpiece, Big Thief"s debut album, is filled with characters and visceral narratives, songs that pivot in the space of a few words. Adrianne"s voice and guitar playing speak of rich emotional territory with grace and insight. In her words, the record tracks "the masterpiece of existence, which is always folding into itself, people attempting to connect, to both shake themselves awake and to shake off the numbness of certain points in their life. The interpretations might be impressionistic or surrealistic, but they"re grounded in simple things." Masterpiece was recorded in July 2015 at an old house that they turned into a studio on Lake Champlain with producer Andrew Sarlo and engineer James Krivchenia (who would go on to become a full-time Big Thief member).
