Das grandiose “Next Year in Zion”-Album ist mittlerweile zwölf Jahre alt, danach kam leider nicht mehr viel von der einst französischen, mittlerweile aber durch und durch amerikanisierten Band Herman Dune, einst Herman Düne. Heute leben sie in Kalifornien und klingen konsequent nach Americana-Indie-Folk, mit deutlichen Country-Referenzen (reichlich Pedal Steel) und deutlichen Anklängen an die „Basement Tapes“ von The Band. Der Opener ist dann auch gleich eine gekonnte „The Weight“-Paraphrase, mit üppigen Bläsern und fest verankert in den 70ern. Im Weiteren folgen dann diese typischen, kleinen und extrem liebevoll inszenierten Song-Preziosen, getragen vom sympathisch-charismatischen Gesang von David-Ivar und illustriert mit vielen kleinen Produktionsdetails. Mal fühlt man sich an Santo & Johnny erinnert, mal an die Byrds a la „Sweethearts Of The Rodeo“. Ob als Country Waltz oder glamourös in Richtung Marc Bolan: hier geht es um Songs und Geschichten, souverän inszeniert und von leicht schrulligem Charakter. Grundton ist ein romantischer Country-Vibe, sonorer Groove kommt vom akustischen Bass und besonders schön gerät auch die vokale Unterstützung durch Caitlin Rose bei „Vinegar Hill“. Gelungenes Comeback einer stark vermissten Band. (Joe Whirlypop)
Quarantined in the sleepy San Pedro neighborhood of Vinegar Hill, on the same harbor-adjacent street where Charles Bukowski lived out his final years, David-Ivar Herman Dune, visual artist and founding anchor of French antifolk stalwarts Herman Dune, turned those Covid-induced anxieties inward and emerged from his home studio with the new full-length LP Notes From Vinegar Hill. There's something for everyone on this record-folksy rockers, Bakersfield twang, Big Pink-style Americana, 70s AM Gold, and rough-hewn Cold Turkey guitar stomps. The songs speak of the suffocating claustrophobia of isolation and fear, the anguish of being an immigrant in a country where policies harden by the moment, but also of the beauty of California, the ocean, and a quiet life with three black cats that turned the heart of a Scorpio toward felines. This album is dedicated to David Berman.
