Auf den ersten Blick mag es verwundern, dass ein so begnadeter Songpoet, wie der Wahl-New Yorker auf seinem neuen Studio-Album mit einem Song-Zyklus ausschließlich aus den Federn anderer Autoren aufwartet, denn Scott Matthew hat sich seit seinem selbstbetitelten Debüt von 2008 mit seinen bisherigen drei Solo-Alben höchsten Respekt unter Kritikern und Fans gleichermaßen erarbeitet, auch und gerade als Songschreiber, dessen hochemotionale Lieder singulär aus der Masse herausragen.„Lege Dein Wissen, das Erlernte ab, damit Du Dinge neu und unvoreingenommen aufnehmen kannst“, so die sinngemäße Übersetzung des Vorangestellten. Unlearned beschreibt schon im Titel den Ausgangszustand, den einzig Möglichen, der einem solchen Projekt, wie der hier vorliegenden Sammlung von 14 Songs aus anderer Leut‘s Feder voraus zu gehen hat. Ab dem ersten Ton des neuen Albums wird jedoch klar, dass es sich bei diesen Cover-Versionen nicht mehr um fremde Songs handelt, sondern um ureigenes, originales Material. „Unlearn“, „Vergiss, was Du weißt“…jeder Song ist ein weißes Blatt Papier, das von Scott zu einer neuen Symphonie aus Klängen, Phantasie und Emotion entwickelt wird. Sicher, die Noten bleiben bestehen, die Texte auch, aber darüber hinaus gibt es nur noch Scott Matthew pur. Welche visionäre Kraft, welches Gespür Scott Matthew dabei an den Tag legt, fasziniert. So entsteht aus dem ursprünglich doch relativ trivialen R&B-Smash Whitney Houston’s von 1987 , „I Wanna Dance With Somebody“ eine wundervolle, Piano-dominierte Ballade, ja, mehr als das: Scott’s Version ist ein in Töne gegossenes, perfektes Monument Klang gewordener Sehnsucht.Oder die unglaublich gefühlvolle Fassung von Kris Kristofferson’s „Help Me Make It Through The Night“ mit Scott’s Vater Ian Matthew als kongenialem Duett-Partner. Highlights des Albums aufzuzählen würde bedeuten, den nicht explizit erwähnten Songs nicht gerecht zu werden. Trotzdem sei noch auf zwei Tracks besonders hingewiesen: Das wundervoll luftige „Smile“, im Original von Nat King Cole und aus der Feder Charlie Chaplin’s (!), bei dem Neil Hannon (The Divine Comedy) seine Stimme zum Duett leiht, sowie die Gänsehaut erzeugende Version des eigentlich nicht coverbaren „Love Will Tear Us Apart“ (Joy Division), dem Scott Matthew durch das sanft-schwermütige Arrangement und seiner Entschleunigung eine komplett neue, faszinierend-berührende Facette hinzufügt, ausschließlich getragen von seiner Stimme, dem gefühlvollen Piano-Spiel von Marisol Limon Martinez und Eugene Lemcio’s Bass.Es ist ein Faszinosum, dass Scott in der Lage zu sein scheint, in den unterschiedlichsten Liedern den emotionalen Kern zu erkennen und heraus zu arbeiten, immer sehr ernsthaft und respektvoll, wie es im Original selbst für den geübten Hörer wohl nie zu erkennen gewesen wäre.„I interpreted these songs as I felt them . Aufgenommen im Saltlands Studio in Brooklyn, NY, entstanden gefühlvolle, Raum lassende und Raum greifende Arrangements, eingespielt mit so phantastischen Musikern wie M. Eugene Lemcio, Clara Kennedy, Spencer Cobrin, Marisol Limon Martinez, oder der portugiesischen Akkordeonistin Celina da Piedade, aber vor allem auch mit dem exzellenten Gitarristen Jürgen Stark, einem neuen Gesicht in der musikalischen Familie um Scott Matthew.14 Songs, im Original von Radiohead bis Rod Stewart, von den Bee Gees bis The Jesus And Mary Chain, von Neil Young bis Roberta Flack. Jeder einzelne Song hat eine Bedeutung für Scott Matthew, jeder steht für etwas Wichtiges in seinem Leben: „My parents, my childhood, my emerging self in adolescents, my rediscovery of what is a great song in adulthood. In a way I have harnessed my life’s timeline and condensed it into a series of cover songs. The discovery as a child I was not alone in longing. That songs are solace, friends. These songs have been my friends and with my dearest friends who helped me make this album, we gently ask you to remove preconceptions and UNLEARN your perception about a song, an artist, a genre. At first glance it may seem surprising that such a gifted song poet comes up with a collection of songs exclusively penned by others on his new studio album UNLEARNED. Because Scott Matthew has earned high respect among critics and fans alike since his self-titled debut in 2008. His previous three solo albums made him stand out from the crowd especially as a songwriter with his highly emotional songs. "Remove what has been learned,the preconception of what you know, so you can view things in a new way and without prejudice", that`s the corresponding translation of the album title. Unlearned, as a title describes the intention of this covers album.It is enigmatic and magnetic. Scott seems to be able to discover, feel and work out in a wide variety of songs the emotional core, always with respect, as it would have probably never have been heard in the original.
