25er der Singer-Songwriterin aus Nashville, die (angemessen) auf John Prines Oh Boy-Label zu Hause ist. Sie zelebriert aufs Schönste eine sehr traditionsbewusste Country-Spielart, die neben den 60ern (und manchmal 50ern) stark vom Outlaw Country der 70er Jahre inspiriert ist allerdings zuweilen erfreulich eigenwillig, mit unvermuteten Schlenkern und variablen hoch attraktiven Saiten-Einwürfen. Wobei ihre Stimme absolut optimal klingt und eingesetzt wird für dieses Genre, was gleichfalls auf die hoch kompetente begleitende Band zutrifft; bestehend durchgehend aus Akustik- und E-Gitarre, Pedal Steel, gern punktuell agierender Fiddle (die schon mal quasi im Duett mit der Pedal Steel erklingt). Diffizil/differenzierte Songs zwischen straight (sachte) treibend und atmosphärisch, abgespeckter wirkende in relaxt mit unterschwelligem Drive, dezent in Richtung (Outlaw) Country Rock tendierende, recht oft balladesk in handfest und melodisch erstaunlich originell oder feinfühlig malend (so sparsam wie schön instrumentiert). Und stets deep, gehaltvoll! Ein, zwei Mal dachte ich an die tollen Sachen der ganz frühen kd Lang, aber auch neuere/aktuellere Acts wie Charley Crockett kamen mir in den Sinn. Auf jeden Fall eine dicke Empfehlung, für Genre-Fans schon fast Pflicht! (detlev von duhn)

There's no real way around it: Kelsey Waldon's new album, Every Ghost, is heavy stuff. Across its nine songs, she confronts addiction, grief, generational trauma, and even herself - and comes through it stronger and at peace. "There's a lot of hard-earned healing on this record," Waldon says. As she sings in the album's title track and first song, 'Ghost of Myself,' she's put in the work not only to better herself and leave behind bad habits, but also to learn to love her past selves. Compassion is a throughline on Every Ghost, whether it's for Waldon herself, for the person in the throes of addiction in 'Falling Down,' or for a suffering world in 'Nursery Rhyme.' The people in Waldon's songs aren't irredeemable - they're struggling.
