Der Winter ist hiermit endgültig vorbei. Wenn nicht meteorologisch, dann werden die Abende spätestens mit dem neuen Album von Spain mild und sommerlich. Josh Haden ist nach zweijähriger Pause zurück und umarmt uns mit seiner Stimme und seinen Geschichten. Mit dem Album Carolina wendet er sich seiner persönlichen sowie seiner familiären Vergangenheit zu und lässt uns mit am großen Esstisch sitzen während er erzählt. „I wanted to get back to my musical family roots of country and of my dad who passed away two years ago. This is the first album I released since my dad died.” Charlie Haden war der bedeutendste Kontrabassist des 20. Jahrhundert und stilprägend für den Free-Jazz. Er verstarb im Juli 2014, wenige Wochen vor seinem 77. Geburtstag in Los Angeles. Joshs Vater war an den vorangegangenen Produktionen immer beteiligt, zum einen als Musiker zum anderen als Mentor: „If he doesn’t approve, I usually have to go back and fix the mixes.“
Spain hat uns schon einmal warten lassen. Nachdem die Band 1995 mit ihrem Debüt The Blue Moods Of Spain und ausgiebige Tourneen durch die USA, Australien und Europa eine internationale Fangemeinde aufgebaut hatte, folgten die Alben She Haunts My Dreams (1999) und I Belive (2001). Die Musik von Spain wurde Teil von Soundtracks von Filmen (The End Of Violence von Wim Wenders, 1997) und Serien (Six Feet Under, HBO 2003) und wurde unter anderen von Johnny Cash und den Red Hot Chili Peppers gecovert. Nach dem dritten Album wurde es für einige Jahre still um die Band, die das Genre Slowcore durch ihre eigene Interpretation von langsam mit prägten. Erst 2007 setzte Haden die Band mit neuen Mitgliedern wieder zusammen, 2012 folgte das neue und erste Album auf dem Glitterhouse Label The Soul Of Spain, 2013 die live Session The Morning Becomes Eclectic und 2014 das Studio-Album Sargent Place.
An den Aufnahmen für das neue Album Carolina sind nur eine Handvoll ausgewählter Musiker beteiligt gewesen. Kenny Lyon, ein Wandler zwischen den Genres, der in den letzten 40 Jahren als Session-, Studio- und Live-Musiker mit so unterschiedlichen Acts wie den Lemonheads, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Joe Walsh oder NoFX zusammengespielt hat, bildet neben Haden selbst das wichtigste Element der Band. Er spielt zusätzlich zu den akustischen und elektrischen Gitarren auch Keyboard und Piano, Lap Steel, Pedal Steel und Banjo, die den Alt-Country und Americana Stil dieses Albums definieren. „On previous albums I felt I was writing and releasing too many music genres in the same project.“ Carolina ist dagegen konzentriert und straight-forward. “In other words, a little different from past Spain albums.” wie Haden selbst zugibt.Kenny Lyon war ebenfalls für Produktion, Mix und Bearbeitung verantwortlich. Aufgenommen wurden die Stücke in seinem Studio in den Gaylord Apartments in Los Angeles. The Gaylord ist eines der historischsten Gebäude in Los Angeles. Hadens Vater sah Ornette Coleman in dem Club um die Ecke auftreten, Robert Kennedy wurde im Ambassador Hotel auf der gegenüberliegenden Straßenseite ermordet. Eine geschichtsträchtige Umgebung für ein rückblickendes Album.
Josh Haden steht mit beiden Beinen in der Gegenwart, schaut in seinen Texten jedoch zurück, auf das Leben seiner Verwandten während der Wirtschaftskrise in den 1930ern: „My grandfather was a very compassionate man but he was also very stoic and we never saw him cry, except when he told us grandkids about growing up during the Great Depression.“ Er berichtet von dem Farmington Minen Unglück 1968 aus der Sicht eines verschütteten Arbeiters. In diesem Lied One Last Look eröffnet die Violine, von seiner Schwester Petra Haden gespielt, die Weite des enger werdenden Raumes. In dem Stück Battle Of Saratoga, das die Traumreise eines heroinabhängigen Musikers erzählt, der in den späten 1960ern von einem Schneesturm in New York gefangen gehalten wird, gleicht die Violine einem unaufhaltsamen Funkenflug. Danny Frankel, gefragter und geschätzter Schlagzeuger und Perkussionist u.a. von John Cale, k.d. lang, Mark Eitzel, Laurie Anderson oder Marianne Faithfull, spielt dazu einen schnellen Marsch.
Josh Haden thematisiert auch seine eigene Vergangenheit. Station 2 besingt seine Kindheit in Malibu, zurückgelassene Freundschaften und eine verlorene Jugendliebe. Er tritt hinter die Musik zurück, damit wir alle gemeinsam oder alleine darin versinken können. Seine Stimme ist die leise brennende Flamme des Slowcore.

Winter is now officially over and the new Spain album will make you feel like contemplating the world on a gentle summer’s evening. After a break of two years, Josh Haden is back and caresses us again with his warm voice. Carolina is an invitation to sit at Haden’s dinner table and look back at his past. “I wanted to get back to my musical family roots of country and of my dad who passed away two years ago. This is the first album I released since my dad died.” Charlie Haden was the most significant contrabassist of the 20th century and defined the style of Free Jazz. He passed away in Los Angeles in July 2014, only a few weeks before his 77th birthday. Josh’s father has been involved in all the previous recordings, as a musician as well as a mentor: “If he doesn’t approve, I usually have to go back and fix the mixes.”
Spain, the band that influenced the genre of slowcore with their very own interpretation of slowlness, have kept us waiting once before. After the band’s debut The Blue Moods Of Spain in 1995 and extensive touring through the USA, Australia and Europe, they gathered a large international following. The first album was followed by She Haunts My Dreams (1999) and I Believe (2001). The music of Spain was featured on soundtracks for movies (The End Of Violnece directed by Wim Wenders, 1997) and TV series (Six Feet Under, HBO 2003) and was covered by Johnny Cash and the Red Hot Chili Peppers among others. It then went quiet for a couple of years after which front man Josh Haden reunited the band with different members. In 2012 they released The Soul Of Spain, their first album on Glitterhouse Records. It was followed by The Morning Becomes Eclectic, a live Session at the brilliant KCRW radio station in Santa Monica, and their fourth album Sargent Place.
The latest album Carolina was recorded by a handful of carefully selected musicians. One of them is Kenny Lyon, a musical shape-shifter, who during the past 40 years has played with acts such as Lemonheads, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Joe Walsh and NoFX. Besides the acoustic and electric guitar, he plays keyboards and piano as well as banjo, lap and pedal steel, which define the alt-country and Americana style. “On previous albums I felt I was writing and releasing too many music genres in the same project.” Instead Carolina is very concentrated and straight forward. “In other words, a little different from past Spain albums.” Haden admits.
Kenny Lyon produced, engineered and mixed the album. It was recorded at his studio at the Gaylord apartments in Los Angeles. The Gaylord is quite a famous historical building. Haden’s father watched Ornette Coleman in the club around the corner and Robert Kennedy was shot at the Ambassador Hotel across the street. A place steeped in history for an album with hindsight.
Even though Josh Haden is a man of the present, his songs look back on the life of his ancestors in the 1930s: “My grandfather was a very compassionate man but he was also very stoic and we never saw him cry, except when he told us about growing up during the Great Depression.” He recounts the Farmington Mine Disaster in 1968 from the point of view of a miner. The violin, played by his sister Petra Haden, makes the collapsing room open up and expand. The song Battle Of Saratoga tells the story of a heroin addicted musician who is trapped in a New York hotelby a snowstorm in the 1960s. The violin resembles the relentless rain of fiery-sparks falling on a battlefield during a hallucination brought on by heroin withdrawl. The drum is played in a staccato marching style by Danny Frankel, a highly sought after and regarded drummer and percussionist who has played with John Cale, k.d. lang, Mark Eitzel, Laurie Anderson and Marianne Faithfull.
Josh Haden also writes about his own past. In Station 2 he sings about his childhood in Malibu, friendships he left behind and a lost love from the days of his youth. He steps back behind his own music so that we can descend into its warm depths and dissolve into it. His voice is the slowly blazing flame of Slowcore.
