Das Quintett um 2 Singer-Songwriter aus New Orleans gefiel mir schon immer sehr, das hat sich nicht geändert. Was neben dem wechselnden zuweilen superben Lead-Gesang (samt perfekten Harmony Vocals hier und da) und dem teilweise herausragenden (tendenziell old-fashioned) Songwriting auch an ihrem Umgang mit ihren Roots-Wurzeln liegt: Der fällt ausgesprochen eklektisch aus, eher unbestimmter R´n´B trifft auf Outlaw- und/oder Songwriter-Country (zugegebenermaßen mit leichtem Übergewicht), Folk, Pop der 70er, zwischendurch 50s-Crooning, Latin/Karibik-Spritzer, ein wenig Country-Soul, Americana im entspannt groovenden Rock-Kontext, sogar ein Hauch Acid/Psychedelia ist dabei eindeutig festzulegen sind sie jedenfalls fast nie, alles fließt ineinander, eigen und immer wieder anders verarbeitet, ganz gern mit einer Prise Southern-Flair versehen, aber auch mal ein gewisses Westcoast-Folk Rock-Flair. Swampig, ganz gelassen, balladesk, kraftvoll und rhythmisch ansteckend, lässig schlurfend, freudvoll, oft relaxt. Verpackt in ein zuweilen außerordentlich reichhaltiges (bis bunt schillerndes kaleidoskopartiges) Klangbild von hohem Reiz (generell elektrische, partiell auch akustische Gitarren, Pedal Steel, einige wirklich tolle Streicherarrangements, Vibrafon, ein (schon mal hinreißend solierendes) Sax, Orgel, E-Piano, Geige, Flöte). The Deslondes are a five-piece band from New Orleans. The band splits up songwriting and lead vocal duties among its five members, continuing its democratic ethos and musical versatility. Multiple members have released solo recordings between their sophomore release, Hurry Home (2016) and their latest release Ways & Means but throughout the time between albums the Deslondes continued to build on their inventive take on New Orleans country and R&B. Ways & Means finds the band leaning on the country-folk of their debut along with the sometimes-psychedelic, electrified gospel-soul sound of Hurry Home. The sound will continue to draw comparisons to the country-funkiness of The Band, Link Wray and others but Ways & Means is the sound of a band that understands the history of American music, while embracing their own contemporary approach.
