26er, aufgenommen vor allem live im Studio, viele Gäste. Insgesamt wirken sie auf mich diesmal weniger „extraordinär“, schon sehr vielfältig, aber nicht ganz so extrem, nicht besonders elektronisch (klar gibt´s eine Menge Synthies, die werden aber irgendwie songdienlicher eingesetzt als zuletzt, in meiner Erinnerung jedenfalls). Im Einzelnen: Galoppierender zeitloser Indie Rock zwischen Tempo, Schärfe und Schönheit, inklusive Noise-Elementen. Ein wunderbares Neil Young-Cover (Red Sun), schillernd und bodenständig zugleich, rhythmisch stoisch, melodisch entzückend, mit strukturierenden Bläsern. Letztere gibt´s (im Tiefton-Bereich) in einem weiteren, zwischendurch ziemlich süffigen Stück, dabei bestechen feingezeichnete/filigrane Gitarren eine Art Edel-Pop-Rock. Ein Folk-Pop-Derivat strotzt vor atmosphärisch bezaubernder/betörender balladesker Anmut, melancholisch, akustisch-elektrisch klangmalend. Eine weitere Indie Rock-Nummer (ausgesprochen individuell) kommt rhythmisch enorm reizvoll, entwickelt mit der Zeit hypnotische Qualitäten. Einmal taucht ein Hauch melodiöser Art Rock der 70er auf, der Track lebt u.a. von Wiederholungen. Eine Ballade mit Poesiefaktor enthält eine bunte ziemlich begeisternde instrumentale Vielfalt, sowie verstärkt Roots-Elemente. Schneller mitreißender „Post Wave“/Post Punk (mit Pop-Flair mittels der Vocals) wird zum Schluss noch einmal intensiviert, euphorisierend; ein weiterer Song geht in eine ähnliche Richtung. Eine melancholische Indie-Ballade klingt luftig und bewegend. Mehr Rootseinfluss (in unkonventionell) schmücken ein friedliches, in Teilen fast feierliches und einfach wunderschönes Stück. Das alles erstrahlt in erfrischender Natürlichkeit, finde ich, und gerade die Tasten-Sounds gefallen mir sehr! Die Arrangements enthalten in ständiger Variation neben den Synthies natürlich E-Gitarre, Marimba, Vibrafon, Euphonium, Piano, Akustikgitarre, Klarinette und Posaune (öfters als gedacht), Dulcimer, Harmonium, einmal auch prägende weibliche Backing Vocals. With "News from Planet Zombie", The Notwist return to view after years of exploration and experiment with an album rich in both melancholy and positivity, sketched across a suite of thrilling, fiercely committed pop songs. It"s an album reflecting a chaotic world, but responding with warmth and generosity, to achieve creative and spiritual consolidation. Recorded in their home base of Munich, it reconnects with the security of the local to explore the troubles of the global: a guiding impulse writ large across this album"s eleven songs. It"s also the first studio album since 1995"s "12" that the entire band recorded together in the studio in its expanded live formation. A new album by The Notwist is always a curious endeavour; their musical language is as consistent and resilient as the contexts for creativity are unpredictable and ever shifting. For "News from Planet Zombie", the core trio of Markus and Micha Acher and Cico Beck embraced the plural possibilities of writing together, bringing songs to the collective and then arranging, rehearsing and recording that material live, in the studio. The result is an album that"s energised, fully in "the now", with spectacular moments where you can hear the magic bubbling up in the dynamic between the Achers, Beck, and fellow members Theresa Loibl, Max Punktezahl, Karl Ivar Refseth, and Andi Haberl. "News from Planet Zombie" acknowledges the distress of our current geopolitical impasse, while reminding us there are collective ways forward.
