Das Leben, wie es erwacht, und wie es verschwindet. Und die Zeit, die dazwischenliegt. Wenn uns die Beine versagen, und wenn wir uns erinnern an etwas, das noch nicht passiert ist. Als The White Birch das letzte Mal waren, verließen sie kurz vor Mitternacht die Bühne des Off Festivals im polnischen Myslowice. Ein warmer August-Abend im Jahre 2006 bedeutete das Ende nach vier Alben, zwei davon auf Glitterhouse, und 10 Jahren Bandgeschichte. Mit „Star Is Just A Sun“ veröffentlichen The White Birch 2002 ihr Meisterwerk. Das Album war mystisch, es war ruhig, es floss, es verwob Cale mit Drake und Godspeed You Black Emperor. Sie tourten, und immer mehr Menschen erzählten sich von dieser Band. Schnell waren sie nicht mehr „The Norwegian Sigur Ros“, sondern The White Birch. Dann “Come Up For Air”, der Abschied in Polen. Und Wikipedia macht aus “are a band” ein “was a band”. The White Birch aber blieben. In den Herzen und im Kopf von Ola Floettum, der die Band nicht aufgab. Nicht im winterlichen Oslo des Jahres 2008, auch nicht im Sommer 2010, und auch nicht im Frühling 2012. Neun Jahre. Ideen und Lieder kamen und „flogen aus dem Fenster“. Dazwischen passierte das Leben. Wenn The White Birch gerade nicht aktiv waren, und waren sie es überhaupt?, komponierte Floettum Filmmusiken. Jahr für Jahr. Und immer mehr. Er lernte, wie man Bilder verstärkt und erzählte Geschichten. „Neun Jahren lang. Ich verlor meine Mutter, ich gründete meine Familie mit zwei Kindern. Wir fanden ein Haus in Oslo. Und dort, im Keller, nahm ich ein Großteil des Albums auf“, sagt Ola Floettum. Und so übersetzte er diese Spuren der Zeit in Töne, in kaum wahrnehmbare Klangtupfer, „The Weight Of Spring“.Die Welt, wie wir sie sehen. Eine lange Reise. Am Ende siegt die Dunkelheit. „Once I was just a boy with the urge to destroy“ und doch ist der große, alles überlagernde Verlust nur einen Wimpernschlag entfernt. „I did not read these newborn sparks through the wilting trees, I could only see the dark as it came.” Die Welt, wie sie erwacht. Wärme. „I was blind, now I can see“, und, „no more darkened doors“. Und wie sie vergeht. In Schmerz „as the morning dew fell as rain“. The White Birch sind jetzt Ola Floettum. „So viel Freiheit, so viel Raum, und immer diese Zwiegespräche mit mir. Das war nicht einfach“. Ole-Henrik Moe. Komponist, klassisch geschult. Auf „The Weight Of Spring“ an der Violine, an der Viola, an der singenden Säge. Pal Hausken, ein Absolvent der norwegischen Musikakademie mit dem Rhythmus. Moren Barrikmo, wie Hausken Mitglied des Magical Orchestras von Susanna Wallumrod, die hier bei „The Hours“ zu hören ist. Ingrid Olava und immer wieder die Schauspielerin Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Floettums Frau. Ingar Hunskaar, in dessen Biographie sich Namen wie Kings Of Convenience, ST. Thomas, Serena Maneesh und Jaga Jagazzist finden. Ganz am Ende: Grammy-Gewinner Bob Katz, der „The Weight Of Spring“ final ausleuchtet.Werden wir uns in neun Jahren erinnern? Und woran? An Namen? August 2006 - It was a warm summer's night when The White Birch left the stage at Off Festival in Myslowice, Poland close to midnight. After 10 years band history and four records they played the last show this evening and broke up. 4 years before in 2002 The White Birch released their masterpiece „Star Is Just A Sun“ with Glitterhouse Records. It was a mystical album, quiet and fluent - complecting Cale, Drake and Godspeed You Black Emperor. They started touring and reached bigger audiences. Soon the trite label, „The Norwegian Sigur Ros“ vanished and The White Birch became known as a trademark of ist own. After that they released „Come Up For Air“ (2005) followed by the afore-mentioned farewell show in Poland. The Wikipedia status shortly changed from “are a band” to “was a band”.The White Birch though survived in the heart and mind of Ola Flottum who won't forsake his band. Neither in the wintry Oslo of 2008, nor in the summer of 2010, not either in the spring of 2012. Besides that, Ola Flottum started composing music for films, learned bit by bit how to accompany pictures with his music, and spent further on most of time by writing film scores. „It has taken 9 years, many songs have been thrown out the window before I eventually found my 12 chosen ones. During these years I've lost my mother, started a family, raised two kids, and bought a house in Oslo were I've recorded most of the album in the basement. “, he says. And so he turned all that what life gave and took from him into music, sometimes almost unnoticeable tones and soundscapes.The Weight Of Spring. The world as we see it. A long road. The White Birch became Ola Flottum. „A lot of freedom, not always so easy to cope with, since you have to argue with yourself.“ On Flottums side appears the classic educated composer Ole-Henrik Moe playing the violine, the viola and the singing saw. Beside him there's Pal Hausken a Norwegian Academy of music graduate (rhythm section) and Moren Barrikmo who's like Hausken a member of Susanna Wallumrod‘s (vocals on „The Hours“) Magical Orchestra.
