Singer-Songwriter von erheblicher Spannweite, aus Philadelphia bzw. Georgia. Ehedem hat er mit den Roots gearbeitet, als Produzent von Mavis Staples erhielt er einen Grammy, seine Einflüsse (laut eigenen Worten) sind extrem vielfältig (und stammen von Musikern aus Soul, Pop, Jazz, Hip Hop und anderem), er selbst nennt es „Future Soul“, seine Stimme wird mit Bob Marley und Marvin Gaye verglichen. Die Vielfalt ist fürwahr auch auf diesem in Muscle Shoals aufgenommenen Album hörbar: Zeitloser Songwriter-Pop trifft Soul (mehrfach, teils 70s-belehnt, aber niemals pur, und eingängig), alter rauher aber modifizierter Blues vermengt sich mit sanftem Multi-Roots-Songwriter-Stoff, eine intime Ballade wird elektronisch bearbeitet (Sound wie Stimme, während Tempo- und Rhythmus-Verschiebungen überraschen absolut originär!), ein individuell gestalteter Mix aus old-timey-Folk, weiteren Roots-Anlehen, stoischem Groove, Drive und Indie-Ideen, so etwas wie Songwriter-Indie Pop unter R´n´B-Einfluss… Dabei arbeitet er gerne mit ausgesprochen entspannten teils auch nur angedeuteten/dezenten Grooves, die immer wieder auf Loops/programmierten sparsamen Beats basieren, und mit einem Sound, dessen Bestandteile nicht immer gleich erkennbar sind, irgendwie verwaschen, mal ein bisschen „sumpfig“ ein aparter geschmackvoller Synth, E-Gitarre sind oft dabei, hier und da stechen Banjo, Orgel, (E-) Piano heraus, eine Akustikgitarre, ein Mellotron (?). Speziell die (z.B. feinziselierten, farbig reizvollen) Tastenklänge wirken auf mich sehr attraktiv, einiges ist eher sparsam bis „understatement-mäßig“ gehalten, zwischendurch wird´s kurz spacey, oder es tauchen abgefahrene Breaks auf. Hat auf jeden Fall eine ungewohnt eigenständige/spezielle und einnehmende Note, Spezial-Tip. (detlev von duhn)
