Die seit über 20 Jahren aktive Wiener Band BULBUL hat dank ihres unkonventionellen Sounds und ihrer eindrucksvollen Live-Shows quer durch Europa Kultstatus erreicht. Für ihr mittlerweile achtes Album hat sich das Trio mit dem Produzenten Zebo Adam (u.a. Bilderbuch, ...) zusammengetan. Achtes Album in über zwanzig Jahren: die Band um Chef „Raumschiff Engelmayr“ konnte so wohl nur in Österreich entstehen und überleben. Hier sind musikalische Starrköpfe am Werk, die sich von Trends und Moden nicht irritieren lassen und konsequent ihren eigenwilligen Stil kultivieren: auf der Bühne wird gerne im Hendl-Kostüm performt. Man stelle sich eine mögliche Schnittmenge aus Attwenger und Blind Butcher (aus der Schweiz!) vor so ungefähr klingt dieses neue Album. Man singt englisch und spielt nach wie vor einen kantigen, groovigen, spacigen Postpunk-Hybrid-Sound. Mit treibend-dreckigem Bass und harrschen Gitarrenriffs, die aber eine crossoverhafte Funkiness haben, weshalb die Mehrzahl der stoischen und harten Tracks dann doch ziemlich tanzbar ausfällt. Mit Space-, Industrial- und 80er-Einflüssen, letztlich aber eben vor allem ganz und gar eigensinnig. Am besten gefällt mir das finale „Fuckeroni“: tonnenschwer und hart riffend, fast schon auf den Spuren der Melvins. Gecovert wird „Directions“ von der Norwegerin Ane Brun. (Joe Whirlypop)

Bulbul is a band from Vienna, Austria, who combine Rock with Dance, Electronic and Experiment. Their musical approach is a unique blend of the unexpected and the unpredictable throwing monolithic rhythms down your throat that make you dance. Once your legs start moving, they've already left your body, crossed the motorway, crashed straight into the roadside trees, and started cutting wood or maybe searching for small furry animals.

BULBUL incorporate pop musics' superficiality as well as the structure beneath - they can annihilate the cheapest rhythm and morph it into the most virtuous and complex arrangement, all within the blink of the eye. As monstrous walls of sound channel into introspective patterns you just stand there, mouth agape while you ask yourself "how the hell is this possible and why does it feel so good?".
