Review
Umeko Ando (1932-2004) was a folk singer from northern Japan and a prominent representative of Ainu culture on the island of Hokkaido. Ihunke was her first album, recorded in 2000 together with Ainu musician and dub producer Oki Kano. Originally released only in Japan. The 16 Ainu songs on Ihunke are delicate, organic gems. Built upon Oki Kano"s hypnotic Tonkori patterns - a traditional five-string Ainu harp - Umeko Ando"s vocals unfold in repetitive, mantric phrases, often structured as call-and-response. Oki is one of the few professional Tonkori players performing internationally with his Oki Dub Ainu Band. The songs radiate a mystical energy: in the album"s opening, crows seem to call in perfect rhythm with Ando"s brittle voice, as if nature itself were joining in. Her singing evokes the spirit of animals from the sky and the forest.
