Er gilt als der Ngoni-Meister Nummer eins, nicht nur in Mali ein Saiten-Virtuose sondergleichen, der dem Instrument Klänge entlockte, die in dieser Form unbekannt waren (in seiner Band Ngoni Ba mit gleich 4 teilweise unterschiedlichen Ngonis), vor ca. 10 Jahren zudem begann, es zu elektrifizieren (samt einem phasenweise beinahe rockigen Album). Nunmehr klingt er erheblich luftiger, die Dichte und Intensität fährt er herunter, alles bleibt akustisch, die Tempi fallen überwiegend relativ zurückhaltend aus (ohne auf etwas flottere ganz zu verzichten, gleich im überraschend Groove-betonten Opener entwickelt sich ein bestechender Drive), ein paar Stücke wirken geradezu relaxt, oder gar wie in slow motion (sehr reizvoll).

Aber egal in welcher Geschwindigkeit, die Rhythmen wirken sehr sehr delikat, ohne je spektakulär auszufallen! Sein Spiel klingt brillant wie immer, gern filigran und irgendwie „gestochen“, dabei musikdienlich wie gehaltvoll, von erstaunlicher Bandbreite, ergänzt von Bass-Ngonis und sparsamer Percussion vor allem aber in der Dominanz immer wieder abgelöst von der blendenden zuweilen durchdringenden Stimme von Ami Sacko (bei der Hälfte der Tracks), die für eine ganze Reihe hinreißender Highlights sorgt. Das Ergebnis ist tolle lebendige von westafrikanischen Traditionen durchdrungene Musik, die jedoch dort nicht stehen bleibt; variiert und weiterentwickelt, passenderweise auf eigenem Material fußend, zwischendurch bezieht sie ein gewisses bluesiges Flair ein (zu hören freilich ausschließlich in seinem Ngoni-Spiel, das manchmal eine fabelhaft „singende“ Note erhält). Bassekou Kouyaté, the genius and undisputed master of the N"goni, is the man who gave this ancient instrument all its noble notes and made it shine on international stages with the greatest musicians: such as Carlos Santana, U2, Taj Mahal... One of the true masters of the ngoni, an ancient traditional lute found throughout West Africa. He is a virtuoso, innovator and stronghold of tradition all at the same time. He has collaborated with many musicians in Mali and beyond: he has shared the stage with the likes of Youssou N"Dour, Ali Farka Toure, Bela Fleck, The Kronos Quartet, Taj Mahal, Eliades Ochoa, Damon Albarn, Michael League... He was one of the key musicians on Ali Farka Toure"s posthumous album "Savane", released in July 2006, played in the Symmetric trio with Toumani Diabate (kora) and was part of Taj Mahal"s "Kulanjan" project. He won several BBC awards for his celebrated debut album "Segu Blue", was Grammy-nominated for the follow-up "I speak fula" and played hundreds of concerts across the globe, sharing the stage with everyone from Paul McCartney to John Paul Jones and Bono.
