Authentischer Stoff aus dem Algerian der 70er und frühen 80er, ausgegraben vom vorzüglichen Schweizer Label Bongo Joe. „Kabyle Rock“ heißt das Genre, wenn ich es richtig verstanden habe. Es kombiniert traditionelle Berber-Musik, Tuareg-Sound, Desert Blues und Westliches von Psych Rock über Funk bis zu Beinahe-Disco. Gespielt werden die groovenden Nummern mit Orgel, E-Gitarre (gerne mit WahWah), dickem E-Bass und ganz schön fettem Groove. Der Gesang ist recht roh und ein wenig gewöhnungsbedürftig, der oft psychedelische (und teils charmant wacklige) Funk-Beat hat es aber in sich. Wenn dann noch Gitarre und (Farfisa-) Orgel miteinander spielen, entwickelt das schon eine sehr hypnotische Tiefenwirkung. Ob Les Abranis für den historischen Maghrebi-Sound typisch sind, kann ich mangels Kenntnis nicht beurteilen wohl aber, dass mir der kantig-spacige Groove des Albums und die ungewohnte Sprache ganz hervorragend gefallen. Am besten sind die richtig tanzbaren Nummern mit treibendem Slap-Bass, pluckernder Casio-Beatbox oder auch mal unerwartetem Offbeat, fast schon nordafrikanischer Reggae ein spannender Culture Clash so oder so.
