Faszinierendes von Strut Records: Dies sind Aufnahmen des afghanischen Sängers Nashenas aus den 70ern, die bislang kaum außerhalb seiner Heimat gehört worden sein dürften. Sie bilden den Start der neuen Compilation-Reihe "The New United Sounds Of Asia”, der mit den raren Aufnehmen des Ghazals-Sänger Dr. Mohammad Sadiq Fitrat (aka Nashenas) souverän gelingt. Die Aufnahmen stammen aus den Archiven von Radio Kabul und entstanden Mitte der 70er Sie wurden ursprünglich nur für den Radioeinsatz produziert, später aber vom iranischen Label Royal als Singles veröffentlicht. Diese dienten wiederum als Grundlage für die Compilation natürlich frisch gemastert. Das Album kommt mit neuen Linernotes des mittlerweile in England ansässigen Nashenas. Als Laien für fernöstliche Musik erinnert mich der Sound deutlich an Realworld-Star Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan allerdings in einer deutlich entspannteren Variante. Während Nusrat auf üppige Grooves, dramatisches Pathos und ekstatischen Gesang setzt, ist Nashenas eher ein poetischer Storyteller. Sein Instrument ist das Harminium, begleitet wird er von Tablas, wahlweise auch Tamboura und Violine. Die Songs haben einen milde psychedelischen Vibe und dezenten Groove, sind letztlich faszinierender Ethno-Hippie-Sound, um mal tief in die musikalische Klischeekiste zu greifen. (Joe Whirlypop)

Nashenas first made his move towards music aged 16 in 1951 when he approached Afghanistan's national radio station, Radio Kabul, with an idea for a broadcast and, impressed with his language skills, they offered him a permanent job. "I was inclose contact with some of the big names in Afghan music like Jalil Zaland," Nashenas explains. "My father had a gramophone and we listened to other singers like Ustad Qasim Khan and Kundan Lal Saigal." After unsuccessful initial forays into singing sessions for the station, he honed his skills as a writer,singer and musician, playing the harmonium. Inspired by a movie he had seen at the cinema, Nashenas wrote a new poemand sang on air again after the evening news, using the name 'Nashenas' (meaning 'unknown') for the first time. Following a wave of positive feedback from the public, he was given a new weekend slot and built his reputation through film song interpretations, famous poems set to music and his own compositions sung in Dari and Pashto.
