Bridget Hayden kommt eigentlich eher aus der experimentelleren Ecke, hier aber widmet sie sich ausschließlich alten Folk-Traditionals, vorwiegend englischen, aber auch irischen oder einmal Appalachen-Ursprungs. Einige der Stücke sind sehr bekannt und x mal gecovert worden, doch WIE sie das macht, ist nicht nur ziemlich eigen, individuell (wenngleich stets pur traditionell ausgerichtet, und mit einigen Parallelen, z.B. zu Shirley Collins), sondern oft schlicht großartig. Und insgesamt ausgesprochen homogen!

Die Besetzung basiert auf Harmonium, Cello, Geige (Bratsche?) auf der einen Seite, sowie (das wiederum ist nicht so „normal“) Banjo auf der anderen (allerdings nicht immer präsent, und in unterschiedlicher Prominenz wenn die stärker zur Geltung kommt, entwickelt sich punktuell ein gewisses Appalachen/Mountain Music-Flair). Vieles spielt sich fast in Zeitlupe ab und klingt ein wenig dunkel eingefärbt (respektive melancholisch), es gibt Drone-Tendenzen (nicht in jedem Song), 1,2 Tracks wirken ein klein wenig „heller“ (okay, relativ gesehen), wahlweise minimalistisch, manchmal steigt ihre (ansonsten eher klare bis becircende) Stimme kurzzeitig fast engelsgleich empor auf jeden Fall fasziniert sie! Ganz zum Schluss dachte ich, wenigstens ansatzweise, eher an eine Art „Neo-Folk“, ohne den strikt traditionalistischen Anspruch. Meist (natürlich auch durch das langsame bis extrem langsame Tempo bedingt) laufen die Tracks so um die 5, 6 Minuten, genug Zeit, um ihre volle Wirkung zu entfachen. Ein faszinierendes tolles Werk, große Empfehlung! (detlev von duhn)

The reinterpreted traditional folk songs that make up Cold Blows the Rain are shaped by the land and the weather. Wrapped in mist and drizzle, the crawling drone of low heavy clouds on flat-top moors. The sound of the dark Calder Valley floor and sun starved hills in West Yorkshire in the North of England. Bridget Hayden is one such soul who found a home among these hills. The experimental musician, who invites the ghosts in for the classic folk songs that make up her stunning new album, knows only too well about such weather, how rare and treasured the breaks from it are.
