Bekannter natürlich als Co-Leader der Avett Brothers, seine 2. Solo-LP ist, der Titel sagt´s, ein reines Tribute an den großen Greg Brown, einen seiner Lieblingsmusiker und größten Einflüsse. Ohne unbedingt wie der zu klingen. Er arbeitet sehr reduziert, meist genügt die omnipräsente (allerdings erfreulich variabel eingesetzte) Akustikgitarre (oder 2 davon) samt gelegentlicher schöner filigraner Features, teils apart ergänzt von Bass oder Piano, ich vermisse nichts. Fast immer irgendwo zwischen den Polen ruhig, reflektiert, sachte, besinnlich bis sanft gehalten, in gern leiser aber durchaus beweglicher Form (eine Stärke!), mal überaus poetisch, mal völlig introvertiert und noch karger, mal ausnahmsweise viel (feine!) Harmony Vocals über längere Strecken, mal (eine Spur nur) extrovertierter. Zwischendurch klingt ein Song so ziemlich wie 70er Jahre-Singer-Songwriter-Folk (zart und unendlich gefühlvoll!), ein Track überrascht mit von verschiedenen Quellen gespeistem Folk Rock, der Percussion und Glockenspiel (?) einsetzt (mehrschichtig, lustvoll, rhythmische Finesse, ein Hauch Latin bzw. Spanien, ein starker Bass). Er scheut sich auch nicht, einige Stücke genreuntypisch lang auszukosten. (detlev von duhn)
