If Only There Was a River ist das erste vollständige Studioalbum von Anna St. Louis. Die ursprünglich aus Kansas City stammende Songwriterin begann mit dem Schreiben von Songs, nachdem sie vor fünf Jahren nach Los Angeles gezogen war. Zuvor hatte sie eine Kassette mit Aufnahmen bei Woodsist / Mare Records veröffentlicht, die passenderweise den Titel "First Songs" trägt. Die Kassette wurde von NPR erwähnt: All Songs Considered, Pitchfork, und Stereogum.Auf ihrem richtigen Debüt breitet St. Louis ihre Flügel aus und erweitert das Versprechen, das auf "First Songs" angedeutet wurde.

Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, hat St. Louis Kyle Thomas (King Tuff) und Kevin Morby für die Produktion des Albums gewonnen, das von Thomas in seinem Haus in Mount Washington, LA, aufgenommen wurde. An den 11 Songs sind auch Justin Sullivan (Night Shop) am Schlagzeug und Multi-Instrumentalist Oliver Hill (Pavo Pavo) beteiligt. Auch wenn aus den Ecken der Songs Anklänge an Einflüsse wie Loretta Lynn, John Fahey und Townes Van Zandt hervorlugen, ist If Only There Was a River keine nostalgische Angelegenheit. Vielmehr markiert es die Entstehung eines Künstlers, der voll und ganz zu sich selbst findet.
