Ganz enorm, was diese britische Band an staunenswerter Stilvielfalt zu bieten hat, wie technisch virtuos das umgesetzt wird und was für ein unakademisches, viel mehr partytaugliches Tanzalbum dabei herauskommt. Dieser fünfte Longplayer des vielköpfigen Musiker*innen-/DJ-/Producer-Kollektivs bewegt sich erneut virtuos im Orbit um Fixsterne wie Herbie Hancock, Fela Kuti und The Roots. Vokale und instrumentale Vielfalt treffen auf meisterliche Produktionskunst obwohl hier endlos viel passiert, sind die einzelnen Songs nie überladen. Konstante ist ein zwingender Groove: meistens funky, oft afrobeatig, selten auch mal ein bisschen Reggae-Offbeat. Dominant sind die satten Bläser, gerne in Fela-Manier, aber auch mal jazzig oder clubsoulig wie in den 90ern. Smoothe Soulgirls treffen auf lässige Rapper, oft im selben Song. Die Gitarren sind spacig-elegant, Fender Rhodes und smarte Synthiesounds sorgen für spacige Ornamente. Das Album ist ein funky Trip mit farbenfrohem Flow: Tony Allen-Beats kuscheln mit Future Funk, mehrstimmige (oft afrikanische) Vocals schweben über milde psychedelischem Mellotron-Sound. Die saftigen Bläser sorgen durchgehend für Ordnung und Erdung, der (Fusion-) Jazz bleibt meistens im Hintergrund. Die zickigen Rhythmusgitarren gemahnen an James Brown in den späten 60ern, die Rap-Einlagen sind so smooth wie einst vom großen Guru bei Jazzmatazz. Niemand sonst ist aktuell in der Lage, einen derart funkensprühenden Mix aus Afrobeat, Clubsoul, Funk, Rap, Jazz und Future R&B abzuliefern. (Joe Whirlypop)
