Review

First time on vinyl, Feelies' side-project Wake Ooloo's debut, Ltd to 500 ww, with padded inner sleeve. For lovers of Velvet Underground, Feelies, Yung Wu, Luna, Yo La Tengo, Television Wake Ooloo was less a Feelies spin-off band and more of a temporary sequel. The Feelies, Glenn Mercer and Bill Million's on-again/off-again proto-indie pop outfit, broke formed Wake Ooloo at the ruins of The Feelies. Wake Ooloo continued in the Feelies' tradition of jangling guitars, atmospheric percussion, and a deep Velvet Underground streak, but took a far looser approach. Originally released three years after the Feelies' Time for a Witness. On Wake Ooloo's debut LP, Mercer backs down from the mainstream excess that hampered the final Feelies albums and returns to more muscular indie sound that marked his Feelies compositions, and Hear No Evil turns out even more appealing than certain Feelies records. There's still a slight tendency toward rustic, mainstream pop lurking behind the indie jangle, leaving Hear No Evil as their most appealing, if least polished, record.
