Rezension

Review

“Fuzz guitar hero Josh Homme, who built his reputation by erecting monumental jams with heavy rockers Kyuss (arguably the best stoner rock band ever) continues to broaden his scope while introducing some experimental chutzpah to the bandþs sound. Hommeþs guitar acrobatics keep the gearheads satisfied, and Nick Oliveriþs thick bass lines and beefy, marathon jams effectively lull listeners into a trance. But Homme gives a wink and keeps listeners on their toes. He successfully employs pop-flavored enhancements, including handclaps, female vocals and bells - pieces that donþt normally fit the distortion rock puzzle. Homme is the valedictorian of the stoner rock class who has done a 180 and delivered an album markedly different from QOTSAþs eponymous debut. QOTSA takes the road less traveled with the quirky R, and in this genre, traversing new terrain makes all the difference.” (CMJ)
“On "Rated R," laser-guided guitar workouts tear through fleshy melodies and thumping rhythms. Just when you think you have QOTSAþs formula figured out, a vibraphone or free jazz freak-out sends you back to the drawing board. … Somewhere between Soundgarden, þ70 classic rock, and something all their own, Homme and company have hit on a winning formula. Even with all the surprises, Queens Of The Stone Age arenþt so much an enigma as a strong hard rock outfit not afraid to color outside the lines.” (Billboard)
