Review

„Since its 1992 debut, Washington, DC "post-rock" outfit Trans Am has straddled the wide artistic chasm that separates raging rock instrumentalists and retro, Kraftwerkian electronicists. The 1998-released The Surveillance documented the bandþs split personality: each raunchy bass and guitar opus was followed by orchestrations of new-wave electro-ambiance.
Futureworld, Trans Amþs fourth album, represents a true meeting of the two sonic mindsets. Standout cuts such as "Television Eyes," "Am Rhein" and the title track help mesh brash, brooding, guitar-based textures and live drumming with synth chords, snappy drum machine rhythms and vocoder-effected vocals, augmenting the Man vs. Machine imagery that distinguished the trioþs earlier works. Futureworld starts out like a lion, pouncing with noisy, over-the-top aggression, and exits like a lamb, wandering with willowy serenity, all the while maintaining a cohesive flow that testifies to the trioþs maturity as songwriters, programmers and producers. Futureworld is an aptly named album by a band that continues to tighten its focus as it grows into its role as one of the þ90sþ most seasoned and progressive rock troupes.“ (CMJ)
